Our Story

Where Ancient Legends Meet Modern Elegance

EST. 1987

How It All Started

Look, we're not gonna pretend we've been around since the ice age, but there's something kinda special about this place that goes beyond the year we opened our doors.

The name Frostwyrm? Yeah, it comes from old Nordic tales that local families passed down through generations. They'd talk about this mystical dragon that lived in the mountains, protecting travelers and bringing good fortune to those who respected the wilderness. Pretty cool, right? We figured if we're gonna build a luxury resort in these magnificent peaks, we better honor that heritage.

Our Journey Through Time

Construction phase 1987

Breaking Ground

So here's the deal - back in '87, a small group of Whistler locals and Nordic investors had this wild idea. They wanted to create something that wasn't just another ski lodge. The vision was blending Scandinavian spa traditions with Canadian mountain hospitality. Sounds ambitious? You bet it was. But hey, they didn't back down from a challenge.

Opening Day Magic

December 15th, 1989. First guests walked through those timber doors and you could feel it - this place was different. We had 48 suites back then (now we've got 127), a small spa with authentic Finnish saunas, and a restaurant that served the best elk tenderloin you'd ever taste. Word spread fast among powder hounds and luxury seekers alike.

The Big Expansion

Olympics were coming to Vancouver in 2010, and we knew we had to step up. Added the North Wing with penthouse suites, expanded the Nordic Spa to triple its size, and built what's now our signature restaurant. The construction crew found some pretty cool artifacts during excavation - old mining tools from the 1920s. They're displayed in our lobby now.

Wellness Revolution

We'd been watching how people travel differently now - everyone's looking for that wellness angle, y'know? So we brought in specialists from Iceland, Norway, and Sweden to redesign our entire spa concept. Added cold plunge pools, infrared saunas, and these incredible outdoor hot tubs with mountain views that'll make you forget your own name.

Today & Tomorrow

Here we are, still honoring those Nordic roots while pushing forward. We've gone carbon-neutral, source most ingredients from BC farms within 100 miles, and just launched our backcountry expedition program. But honestly? What makes us proud is hearing guests say they feel that connection to the mountain spirit - that Frostwyrm legend - when they stay here.

Main Lodge

Main Lodge

The heart of everything. Our main lobby's got this massive stone fireplace that's been burning since day one. Check-in here, grab a craft cocktail at the bar, or just sink into one of those leather chairs and watch the snow fall. The concierge desk never sleeps - seriously, they're available 24/7.

Nordic Spa Complex

Nordic Spa

This is where the magic happens. 15,000 square feet of pure relaxation. We've got seven different sauna experiences, three cold plunge pools (yeah, they're intense), massage therapy rooms, and those outdoor infinity hot tubs that overlook the valley. Come here after a day on the slopes and thank us later.

Ski-In/Ski-Out Access

Ski Access

Walk out our east entrance and you're literally on the run. No shuttle, no hassle, no waiting. We've got heated ski lockers, a tuning station, and staff who'll have your gear ready each morning. Coming back? Ski right to our heated patio where mulled wine's waiting.

Frostfire Restaurant

Restaurant

Our head chef trained in Copenhagen and brought back some serious skills. The menu changes with seasons but always features BC ingredients prepared with Nordic techniques. Floor-to-ceiling windows mean you're dining with a mountain view. Reservations fill up fast, so don't sleep on this.

Conference Center

Conference Center

Yeah, we do corporate events and weddings too. Five different spaces that can host anywhere from 20 to 300 people. State-of-the-art A/V equipment, catering that'll impress even the pickiest clients, and views that make PowerPoint presentations slightly less painful. The mountain backdrop doesn't hurt for wedding photos either.

Expedition Hub

Expedition Hub

Our newest addition. This is where you'll meet up for guided backcountry tours, snowshoe treks, or summer hiking expeditions. Our guides know these mountains like their own backyards. All equipment provided, all skill levels welcome. Trust us, the places they'll take you aren't on any tourist map.

The People Behind the Legend

Here's the truth - fancy buildings and mountain views are great, but it's really about the folks working here.

We've got staff who've been with us since the early '90s. They remember guests' names, know how you take your coffee, and will go out of their way to make sure your stay isn't just good - it's memorable. Our spa therapists are certified in techniques you won't find anywhere else in North America. The kitchen team? They're passionate about food in a way that shows up on every plate.

And yeah, we've won awards - Travel + Leisure keeps putting us on their lists, we've got some fancy plaques on the wall - but what really matters is when guests come back year after year, bringing their kids who then bring their kids. That's the real legacy.
